What Are Wisdom Teeth and Why Do They Cause Problems?
Wisdom teeth — also called third molars — are the last set of molars to emerge, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people’s wisdom teeth grow in perfectly without any issues, many people in Cuttack and across India experience pain, swelling, and infection due to impacted or misaligned wisdom teeth.
At ZDentistry in CDA Sector-9, Cuttack, Dr. Zuben Mohanty (MDS, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon) performs wisdom tooth extractions with expertise and care — from simple extractions to complex surgical removals.
Do All Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
No — not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. We recommend removal when:
- The tooth is impacted (stuck beneath the gum or bone and unable to fully emerge)
- The tooth is partially erupted, creating a pocket where bacteria collect and cause infection (pericoronitis)
- The wisdom tooth is causing pressure or damage to the adjacent molar
- There is not enough space in the jaw for the tooth to grow in correctly
- Repeated infections, cysts, or abscess formation around the tooth
- The tooth is decayed and cannot be restored due to its position
- It is causing crowding of other teeth or bite problems
If your wisdom tooth has fully emerged, is properly aligned, and can be cleaned easily — it may not need removal at all. Dr. Zuben will assess your X-rays and advise you honestly.
Signs You May Need Wisdom Tooth Removal
See us promptly if you notice:
- Jaw pain or stiffness at the back of the mouth
- Swollen, red, or bleeding gums behind the last molar
- Difficulty opening your mouth or chewing
- Swelling of the cheek or jaw
- Bad taste or smell near the back teeth (sign of infection)
- Recurring headaches originating from the jaw area
- Pain radiating to the ear or neck
Do not ignore these signs — wisdom tooth infections can spread to the jaw, neck, and throat if left untreated.
Types of Wisdom Tooth Removal
Simple Extraction
When the wisdom tooth has fully erupted above the gum line and is not impacted, a straightforward extraction is performed under local anaesthesia. The procedure takes as little as 15–30 minutes and involves loosening the tooth with a dental elevator before removing it.
Surgical Extraction
When the tooth is impacted (partially or fully embedded in the jaw bone), surgical extraction is required:
- A small incision is made in the gum tissue
- Any bone covering the tooth is carefully removed
- The tooth may be sectioned (divided) into pieces for easier removal
- The site is cleaned, and the gum is stitched closed
Dr. Zuben Mohanty’s training as an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon makes him uniquely qualified to handle complex impacted wisdom teeth — including fully bony impactions that many general dentists refer to a specialist.
Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure at ZDentistry, Cuttack
Step 1: Consultation & X-Ray
We take a dental X-ray (OPG or periapical) to determine the position, angulation, and root shape of the wisdom tooth. This guides our treatment plan.
Step 2: Anaesthesia
The area is numbed completely with local anaesthesia. You will feel pressure but no pain. For anxious patients, we take extra time to ensure complete numbness before starting.
Step 3: Extraction
Depending on whether the tooth is simple or impacted, the appropriate technique is used. Complex cases are handled with surgical precision by Dr. Zuben.
Step 4: Post-Extraction Care
Gauze is placed over the socket to control bleeding. Detailed aftercare instructions are given, and prescriptions for pain relief and antibiotics (if needed) are provided.
Is Wisdom Tooth Removal Painful?
The procedure itself is not painful — you are fully numbed with local anaesthesia. What you will feel is pressure and movement, not sharp pain.
After the procedure, some discomfort is expected as the anaesthesia wears off over 2–4 hours. Most patients manage well with prescribed pain relievers. Swelling typically peaks at 48–72 hours and gradually subsides.
“Patients are usually surprised by how manageable the recovery is. The fear of the procedure is almost always worse than the reality.” — Dr. Zuben Mohanty, MDS
Recovery After Wisdom Tooth Removal
Days 1–2:
- Bite gently on gauze for 30–45 minutes after the procedure
- Apply an ice pack to the cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to reduce swelling
- Eat soft foods — rice, yoghurt, dal, soft idli, mashed vegetables
- Avoid hot liquids, straws, and smoking for at least 48 hours
- Take prescribed medication as directed
Days 3–7:
- Swelling and soreness reduce significantly
- Rinse gently with warm salt water from day 2 onwards (not day 1 — it can dislodge the clot)
- Gradually return to a normal diet as comfort allows
- Stitches (if placed) dissolve on their own or are removed at a follow-up
What to avoid:
- Smoking — significantly delays healing and increases dry socket risk
- Using a straw — the suction can dislodge the blood clot (dry socket)
- Vigorous rinsing on day 1
- Hard, crunchy, or spicy foods for the first week
What Is Dry Socket and How to Avoid It?
Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) occurs when the blood clot that forms in the socket after extraction is dislodged or dissolves prematurely, exposing the underlying bone. It is one of the most common complications.
Signs of dry socket:
- Severe, throbbing pain 3–4 days after extraction (pain that was improving suddenly worsens)
- A visible empty socket with no clot — you can see whitish bone
- Bad taste and odour from the socket
To avoid it: Don’t smoke, don’t use straws, and don’t rinse forcefully for the first 24 hours.
If you develop dry socket, call ZDentistry immediately at +91 89844 89929. We will clean the socket and place a medicated dressing to relieve pain and promote healing.
How Much Does Wisdom Tooth Removal Cost in Cuttack?
The cost of wisdom tooth removal in Cuttack depends on several factors:
